The classrooms and lecture theatres are tidied, sides dusted and floors are mopped and hoovered, you think everything is clean… wrong. Germs harvest and multiply in places where you might not see the dirt. So whilst it might be clean and tidy on the surface, making a good impression with staff and visitors, it’s a whole different story underneath.
Harmful bacteria is building up, putting students and staff at greater risk of getting ill and therefore being absent from school or college; having a direct impact on your teaching productivity. More than two-thirds of industry leaders say absenteeism is a growing concern, so making sure you’re reducing the likelihood of staff getting ill is key.
So where do the germs hide?
Desks – This is where many of us spend our time, therefore this is where most of the germs will be hiding. The average desk has 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat… as a result, you might think twice about eating your lunch there from now on!
Phones – You might want to avoid answering the phone for more than just that phone call you’ve been putting off. Because we hold the phone so close to our mouth, it’s packed with bacteria that can easily be passed from one person to another. The average phone has over 25,000 germs per square inch! This is why we will like to give all phones a proper clean.
Mouse & Keyboards – Similarly, your mouse and keyboard are another breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Because you’re working with the equipment all day every day, they pick up germs from your hands as well as leftover crumbs for your lunch. In many cases, 21,000 germs per square inch exist on your mouse and keyboard – that’s enough to put you off snacking at your desk!
Chair Arms – Have you ever thought about how many times per day you touch the arms on your chair? Getting up to go and make a tea, adjusting your sitting position or turning around to speak to a colleague. It’s definitely more time than you first think. The bacteria on them builds up over time, so make sure they get a good wipe down with antibacterial from time to time.
Light Switches & Door Handles – Communal areas are breeding grounds for bacteria; think about how many hundreds of hands open that door or switch on the lights in the day. Over time bacteria build-up, and can be a serious hazard!
